About the Author/Artist Len Sherman

Len Sherman, a talented and creative old fart, is now living out the remainder of his long life in Fosterville, NB. He attended the Vancouver School of Art (Emily Carr) in Vancouver, BC, which now seems about 100 years ago. He worked as an animator and background artist, even being offered a job by Bill Hannah, when the Flintstones started up.  Managing to fool people into thinking he was a great artist, he worked as a TV art director in Lethbridge, AB before moving to Calgary, AB, and then opening his own successful graphic arts business. Shortly after moving his business and family to Nanaimo in the early 80's, a recession hit, and his world literally turned into crap, causing the loss of his business, home and wife - well...losing his wife was caused by fooling around.  Puzzled by the loss of everything, he bought a 42' sailboat (Dreamer II) and then went in search for the meaning of his life, which finally made him an honest man.

Len has a long history of loving and leaving women but he hasn't managed to get rid of his current wife Sarah, yet. She just keeps on sticking around, but that's a good thing because without her, he feels that if she hadn't looked after him with such loving care, when he was diagnosed with rectum cancer, he wouldn't be here today. They live with their little dog McGee (short for Bobby McGee), an aptly named shiatzu,  because he is a little shit and now they are sharing his work with you!

Arctic Odyssey Traditionally published, was written and illustrated upon the author's return from sailing the legendary Northwest Passage with two friends, Winston Bushnell (skipper) and George Hone (first mate), aboard quite possibly the smallest sailboat, Dove III, to ever do so in a single season.  The pages are filled with pen and ink illustrations, many are of the Inuit that I met during the voyage who were warm and very hospitable. It's an adventurous tale told through the eyes and feelings of an artist, sensitive to the rapidly changing arctic, due to climate change. Even then (1994), rising tides were already ravishing the coastline, places like Shishmaref, Alaska, their homes now falling into the sea. "High arctic adventure told without fanfare. . .A story of three remarkable Canadians combatting a hostile environment where mistakes are usually fatal. . .A unique feat of seamanship and daring." - John Guzzwell - author - Trekka Round the World

1.5 PERCENT (2).jpg

1.5 PerCent A novel close to the author's heart when he began writing the story after being diagnosed with rectal cancer. Two operations, radiation and chemo sessions later, he finished the apocalyptic tale, which is set in the near future. After, WWWIII, germ-warfare, nuclear radiation and lethal viruses erupted globally, 1.5 percent is all that survived, including plant life. The tale begins with an aging farmer (Paul) who watched his whole family die, except for one son who lives about 100 miles away. Hoping to find his son still alive, he sets out on foot, a goat, the only animal to survive on his farm, following his every step. During the long walk he encounters a much younger, crazed woman (Julie) and together, they attempt to return to a place he had built in the forest, away from prying eyes - no zombie crap - a very realistic approach of endurance in a world that has gone completely sideways with very little hope for a future.

2.7 percent2.jpg

2.7 PerCent Continuation of Paul and Julie's survival.  They now have a son Jupa (16), more of a man than a teenager, who has never even seen another human being other than his parents. After being discovered, they are attacked by invaders and forced to leave their home by canoe down the St. Croix River (NB, Canada). Although conditions have improved around the world, life expectancy is still very  bleak. The river has changed drastically due to the rising oceans as they paddle through submerged towns along the way - maps and charts now useless.  During their voyage, with hopes of reaching the Atlantic Ocean, they encounter hostile survivors and gain another addition to their family, Dalia (25), a black woman. Although quite an age difference, sparks soon fly between her and Jupa. Paul, now age 73, realizing he no longer has much of a future remaining is determined to find a safe refuge before winter arrives with a vengeance.

3.1 PerCent Third sequel to 1.5 PerCent and 2.7 PerCent. The story picks up 25 years later since the world went completely berserk and only 1.5% of all living things including vegetation, survived. It appears as if life is slowly rejuvenating and perhaps it is, but staying alive is still very bleak for Julie, her young daughter Winona, son Jupa and his wife Dalia. They had found a safe, secluded home in the state of Maine, away from other survivors that would do anything to stay alive, even resorting to cannibalism. Due to lack of wildlife, soon looking at starvation, as much as they don't want to leave, they begin planning for their departure. When an unexpected chance to leave via a small sailboat, Pea Pod presents itself, even though none of them had ever sailed, they load their bare necessities aboard, weigh anchor and sail off. Their voyage through uncharted waters due to the rising seas is precarious, their survival extremely doubtful.

The Return of the Maltese Falcon is about a modern day private detective, Sam Sloan, a throwback from the 1940's. He not only looks very similar but talks and dresses like the legendary actor, Humphrey Bogart, who played the role of Sam Slade in the Maltese Falcon. If you are a fan or even if you are not a fan of Bogie, you should enjoy the antics of this hard-drinking, street-smart, hustler and womanizer, who has been hired by a lady-cop to investigate what he believes to be dirty cops. When everything goes sideways and he becomes an intended victim, not knowing who he can trust, he takes matters into his own hands and is joined with the lady-cop's sister, Kim. Together they attempt to find out who is trying to kill them and why. A fat man, dealer of fine art and a mysterious odd-shaped key seem to be at the heart of his investigation. Between dirty cops, hired professional assassins and wanted by the police and FBI, they walk a very thin line - only a bullet away from death.      $30.

Syrina An aging mermaid resides on an unchartered island, which is part of Haida Gwaii, off the west coast of BC. After getting caught in a trawler’s net and narrowly escaping her captors, she has no idea where the warm waters of her home are located. Since the BC coast is not that far away, Syrina eventually makes her way into a river. However, winter is fast approaching, and she’s in serious trouble. An aging recluse residing near the mouth of the river finds her lying on a beach and takes her to his place. Realizing that she will most likely die if she remains with him, attempting to take her home aboard his small sailboat, they encounter a raging storm.  The tides have turned and now it's time for the mermaid to save the man. Sometimes fantasies become real and who says mermaids don't exist, even old ones?

the gambler cover.jpg

The Gambler Set in the hippie era, Paycheck Joe, the gambler, is very loosely based on the artist-author's younger life. Like many young men, even though Paycheck Joe has been taught to become a responsible and good person, he is unwittingly drawn into a life of excitement and danger. Due to lack of experience and sometimes foolish thoughts of no harm could come to him, he reaches a point of dire consequences, a matter of live and death. In searech of his soul and the sort of man he truly is, he trips back to his earlier years. Money-wisse, gambling on cards and race horses has been very profitable, but at what price. Rubbing shoulders with mobsters, pimps and other dangerous people, it's hard not to become a little like them--self preservation becoming a premium. His life in jeopardy, he partners with a woman in the same position and they flee their perilous predicament, while learning to trust one another. Will life throw them a bone to hang onto or a bullet to the head?   $30.
